80-Year-Old Remanded for Alleged Murder and Attempted Murder in Ekiti State ~ NewsEdge
An 80-year-old man, Lucas Ateniola, has been remanded in a correctional centre in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, over alleged murder and attempted murder. The Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ado-Ekiti gave the order on Wednesday.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Caleb Leramo, Ateniola allegedly murdered Elizabeth Nwamaka and attempted to kill Alice Bodunride at their residence in the Emure-Ekiti area of the state. Leramo informed the court that the accused and his victims were neighbours living in the same building, and that Ateniola claimed that the victims threatened to kill him.
Leramo added that Ateniola went into the rooms of the victims at night, stabbed Elizabeth several times, and dealt her machete blows until her intestines came out of her body. He also stated that the octogenarian stabbed Alice and used a machete to cut her several times when she raised the alarm, which attracted neighbours to the scene to rescue her.
The prosecutor revealed that the accused had confessed to the crime, which contravened the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021. He requested that the court remand Ateniola in a correctional centre pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution.
The presiding Chief Magistrate, Saka Afunso, ordered that the accused be remanded in the correctional centre and adjourned the case until May 11 for mention. The accused did not take a plea.
