Wenger, the legendary Arsenal boss, developed an unfair reputation for being stingy in the transfer window, but in fact, he always put regular people at the club first. Speaking after Arsenal’s 0-0 draw at Leicester in August 2016, Wenger said: “I’ll spend £300million if I have the £300m. “I’m not going to forget that we are a club with 600 employees. We need to have a responsible attitude for them as well.” Head of recruitment Francis Cagigao, who has played an instrumental scouting role at the Emirates for more than a decade, is one of the 55 members of staff who have been axed by the club. Cagigao discovered top talents such as Cesc Fabregas, Gabriel Martinelli and Hector Bellerin, but has been made redundant as the club looks to battle the financial devastation caused by COVID-19.
