Burnley and Sheffield United couldn’t be separated at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon as both their European dreams took a hit with a 1-1 draw. John Egan ensured the high-flying Blades grabbed a point after James Tarkowski had put the Clarets in charge. Sheffield United ace Egan celebrates his equaliser Burnley defender Tarkowski scores against Sheffield United Shorn of Ben Mee, replaced by Kevin Long, but able to play the returning Jay Rodriguez on a windy afternoon, Burnley had an excellent early chance but saw it spurned by Matej Vydra. Sander Berge had an opportunity as the Blades hit back and they felt they could have had a penalty too. Erik Pieters’ handball was ruled accidental by VAR though, leaving Clarets boss Sean Dyche breathing a sigh of relief. Vydra of Burnley shoots wide against Sheffield United You could sense Chris Wilder’s United side were growing into the game with Berge and others missing chances but they were behind just before the break. Tarkowski beating Oli McBurnie at the back post to slide the ball home. McNeil’s delivery to the edge of the area was nodded on by Rodriguez to find the England defender in acres after he got beyond his marker. He easily poked home. Having won 12 of their last 13 home Premier League games when they have scored first, a win for Dyche’s men was on the cards. Alan Brazil’s hatred of VAR just keeps increasing – It’s a joke, stick it! Sheffield United, though, showed they had some fight left and a early substitution saw them tinker with their formation too, placing McBurnie, David McGoldrick, and Billy Sharp all on the pitch at the same time. After the hour-mark good chances were had by both sides and but final passes weren’t able to meet their intended targets in the penalty area. The Blades, bar a Rodriguez shot thwacked wide, were dominating the hosts and they even turned to Jack Rodwell off the bench. He replaced Chris Basham to make his first Premier League appearance in over three years – just a shame he’s only won six of his previous 66. McNeil couldn’t help Burnley to victory Burnley could have sealed a win when Rodriguez and then McNeil went close in quick succession but the drama was still to come. A superb corner routine from United saw Ben Osborn chip a little pass into the penalty area. Sharp met it with a flick on and defender Egan drove a clean half-volley beyond Nick Pope having been unmarked at the back post. A Berge free-kick stung the gloves of Pope as both sides attempted to claim all three points but it did end all square in Lancashire. United are now 10 points off third place with five games to go, while Burnley are 11 points off fourth but are now ahead of Tottenham and sit ninth.,
