Communities in Ogun State Call for Government Intervention to End Cult-Related Insecurity ~ NewsEdge

Residents of Iraye, Fakale, Iluoloye, Eyangbe, Okegbodo, and other communities within the Area Community Development Committee of Ifakowajo in Sagamu Local Government, Ogun State, have called on the government to urgently intervene and support them in ending the insecurity being orchestrated by suspected cultists. This call comes after the recent murder of 19-year-old Moses Joseph in Fakale, which has been witnessing an upsurge in cult activities since 2017.

The Chairman of the Area Community Development Committee, Bakare Waheed, who spoke on behalf of the communities, recounted the havoc the suspected cultists had unleashed on the residents and appealed to the appropriate authority to assist them. He said that they had lost no fewer than seven breadwinners of different families since the security challenges started on July 7, 2017.

Waheed also revealed that the suspected cultists went around robbing the communities, stealing phones, motorcycles, and other valuables from the residents. The Commandant of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria in Fakale, Fatai Owolaranfe, added that they have had similar challenges in the past but were able to douse the tension with the concerted efforts of community leaders and the king of the community.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed that an investigation into the matter had commenced and linked it to some cult activities. The residents are calling for urgent action from the government to end the insecurity in their communities.
