The sentencing of Ekweremadu and his wife has caused shockwaves in Nigeria, where the former deputy senate president is a prominent politician.

The couple had been found guilty of conspiring with Dr Obeta to harvest the kidney of a man in the UK, who was lured to India for the operation.

The plan was foiled by the UK National Crime Agency, which had been monitoring the group’s activities.

Sonia, who is a lawyer based in the UK, said she was devastated by the news of her parents’ arrest and trial.

She said she had no knowledge of their plan and that she had been receiving treatment for her kidney condition through legal means. She also expressed sympathy for the victim of the plot and his family.

The case has highlighted the growing problem of organ trafficking, which is a global issue affecting vulnerable people in developing countries.

The World Health Organization estimates that around 10,000 black market transplants take place each year, with many donors being coerced or deceived into giving up their organs.

“I was devastated by the news of my parents’ arrest and trial. I had no knowledge of their plan and I have been receiving treatment for my kidney condition through legal means.

I feel guilty and sad for the victim of the plot and his family,” said Sonia, who is a lawyer based in the UK.
