It’s a common misconception that Ford v Ferrari—which is airing on HBO on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET—is a very well-made, 152-minute long car commercial. In fact, Ford v Ferrari is a very well-made, 152-minute long sunglasses commercial, courtesy of Matt Damon‘s very good sunglasses.

To be clear: I’m not mad about it. Not one bit. This 2019 drama about the Ford car that defeated the Ferarri in the 1966 Le Mans race in France is, as I said, very well made. It was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture. It features Christian Bale doing a British accent, for once, and many exciting vroom-vroom scenes.  It’s a fun watch. It also really made me want to track down and purchase the beautiful, devastatingly cool sunglasses worn by Matt Damon’s character, Carroll Shelby.
I mean, look at those sunglasses! Look at those golden, slightly translucent frames! Check out that shape—large enough to be practical, but stylish enough to scream “expensive.” They’re just reflective enough to be super cool, but not so reflective that you can’t see Damon’s expressive eyes. Seriously, shout out to director James Mangold and costume designer Daniel Orlandi for finding the perfect pair of shades that not only look great on Damon, but also still allow him room for eye-acting while shielding his corneas from UV rays. (Unfortunately, I have nothing good to say about Bale’s sunglasses, which look like they were purchased at a gas station alongside a Slim Jim and sugar-free Red Bull.)

In fact, Matt Damon’s sunglasses are so fabulous, I’m prepared to call them the Chris Evans sweater of Ford v Ferrari. (f you’re unfamiliar with the great Chris Evans Sweater from the 2019 movie Knives Out, it’s no big deal, it’s just an extremely viral, extremely cool cultural moment started by yours truly.) Matt Damon’s sunglasses may not have launched a marketing campaign or been referred to ominously as “The Sunglasses,” but honestly, they should have been. Can we get that trending? #MattDamonInSunglasses? No? There are lot of other way more important hashtags going on right now? Fine.
The good news? You can buy the exact pair of sunglasses that Matt Damon wears in Ford v Ferrari, which are called Entourage of 7’s Beacon 1020 sunglasses, online. And, fun fact: In addition to Damon’s visage, these glasses also graced the face of Michael Douglas in The Kominsky Method. I’m telling you, these glasses have what it takes to go all the way to the tippy-top! The bad news? They cost $319. Oof. That’s a little too pricey for me, despite their luminous beauty. I’ll settle for the first knock-off pair that I find at Target, thanks.
