The introduction of electric buses in Lagos is part of the state’s efforts to combat climate change and reduce air pollution. The electric buses will be operated by the Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL) and will initially run on five routes: Ikeja to Maryland, Ikeja to Obalende, Ikeja to Tafawa Balewa Square, Obalende to Ajah, and Ikorodu to Tafawa Balewa Square. The buses have a capacity of 60 passengers each and are equipped with air conditioning, USB charging ports, and free Wi-Fi.
The partnership with Oando Clean Energy Limited will see the installation of universal chargers at various locations across the state, making it easy for the buses to be charged. The chargers will also be available for private electric vehicles.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s announcement of plans to establish an assembly plant for electric buses in Lagos is a significant step towards creating job opportunities and boosting the local economy. The plant will not only assemble electric buses but also provide training for technicians and engineers in the field of electric vehicle technology.
