Comedian Katherine Ryan is continuing her Netflix partnership with a new comedy series. Today, Netflix released the official The Duchess trailer, starring Ryan as a single mother living in London who debates having another child. The semi-autobiographical comedy series will hit Netflix on Friday, September 11.
The Duchess tells the whirlwind story of Katherine, a single mother in London who has been estranged from her daughter Olive’s father for years. Katherine is interested in having a second child, but she’s uncertain if Olive’s father, a former boy band star, is up for the task, and she begins looking into sperm donors. Together with her daughter, Katherine sets out to reevaluate her entire life, as well as the many choices that have led her to this point.
Netflix describes The Duchess as a “Catastrophe-like single-cam comedy,” and the trailer does its part to hold up that end of the bargain. The Duchess Netflix trailer puts Katherine in a series of increasingly uncomfortable situations, some of which she handles well, others not so much.
When a new love interest expresses his commitment to their relationship and says that he “wants to be let in” to her small family, Katherine turns his words on their head in front of a very curious mailman. “So, how about this weekend we do anal?” she says while signing for a package. “What?!” stammers her boyfriend. “No, I meant ‘let in’ — that’s not what I — I mean I’ll do it. Like, that’s what I do.”
Elsewhere, Katherine’s relationship with Olive’s dad remains frosty at best, and downright hostile at worst. “If one of my kids are gonna have a shit dad, both of my kids are getting a shit dad,” she says. When she tries to get pregnant with his baby, he can’t get it up, and he explains that it’s her fault. “Maybe because you’re gross and you keep being yourself,” he says. Will they be able to put aside their differences á la Catastrophe, or will this story turn into one?
